Austrian Art

Sep (short for Josef I finally realized) and I took the train to Vienna for the day. We walked down Mariahilfer Strasse and found a good teach yourself German book with a CD so that I could learn by hearing too! Then we continued on to the Museum Quarter's Leopold Museum to view work from all the famous Austrian artists: Schiele [1] [2] , Klimt, Kokoschka and Kubin. Lots of great art in a brand new beautifully designed building.

As "museumitis" set in we headed towards St, Stephens to get a bite to eat at the mystery meat stand. Austrians have many different kinds of sausage, hot dog, and other processed meats. Some scare me, well they all scare me, bu I still consumed one. One of the safer ones I hope.

Stomach's satisfied; we headed to the Huntawasser Haus. This building is really cool: [photo] [photo of a poster]

Huntawasser is an artist that designed this public housing building as if it were a painting. It looks a lot like something Frank Gehry might design only a little more liberal, with more textures and with color. The building has a little Dr. Seuss flavor as well.

We sat in the cafè under the building and I read a picture book about Huntawasser's thoughts and ideas. He also re-designed Vienna's trash incinerator plant and as part of the deal he made the city promise to install environmentally friendly filters in their exhaust system.

I really liked both buildings because they were such a colorful alternative to all the neutral colored buildings. But everyone in Vienna has their own opinion about Huntawasser that they will willingly share with you.
