Mike's Bike Tour

Mikes bike tour took us to a handful of great places in and out of the city.[intro to Amsterdam] [1] [2] [a bridge built by two sisters who wanted to have a shorter rout to visit each other] [what handsome studs] [windmill] [cheese and shoe factory] [1] [2] [treats after a long ride] Definitely worth the price (about $18)

After a well deserved siesta, Brett and I walked around A'dam, while Chris chased a girl that he had met in Barcelona.

Walking through Amsterdam is relatively life threatening. There are very few cars, but the tolleys roll fast through the streets and people on bikes and scooters are everywhere. The lanes for bikes are wider than those for vehicles. Some bikes are equiped for carrying children (plural) as well as groceries. Others are built with two front wheels in front holding a large platform for heavy goods. And did I mention that they are everywhere!

Anyway, Brett and I toured the Red Light district and other random neighborhoods. We came across this plein (plein means square) where a crane was rasing a giant movie screen. We sat, tired of walking, anticipating a good film. As we waited we noticed a big sign reading, "Amsterdam Pride." We thought that it was great that the people had so much pride in their city to actually put signs up saying so. But then we realized that we were surrounded by men embracing eachother and buff women with short hair. The opening scene of the French soft gay porn with Dutch subtitles solidified our ove back to Baba's for another cake before heading back to our hotel.

Not reading the weight limit sign on the lift in the hotel, we invited three others to join the two of us. The lift began to move up and then stopped halfway between floors. The lift went back down after minutes that felt like hours. We should have known better. The small lift had obviously been added to the now dangerously steep stairwell and one wall of the lift moved opposite the carriage... I don't think they're worried about sue-happy lawyers in Amsterdam.
