Destination A'dam
Not a minute after getting off the train in Amsterdam, did we
smell the smoke from the herb that Amsterdam is famous for. I
just knew that the next few days would be quite interesting.
Brett and Chris and I had rode the 7:30 AM train from Paris to A'dam arriving
at 11AM. I had bought a European road atlas, prepairing to hitchhike
to A'dam. But Mike saved me some money.
Mike Chamberlin (Fresno, CA), an awesome high school math teacher,
was headed back to the states and gave me his rail pass that was
good for seven days of unlimited travel. I worked just like he
said, no need to show any ID.
Exiting the station Brett, Chris and I found ourselves in the
middle of a mass of tourists, buskers, locals, beggars, and other
backpackers. Just having woke up, I was a bit overwhelmed with
all the chaos outside the train station. Various people began
to come up to us, trying to sell us places to stay.
We wanted to stay at the Flying Pig Palace hostel, but when we
found out that it was booked we took two nights at the best hotel
price that we could find, about twice as much the hostel but with
our own shower (rare in Hotels and hostels), television, and a
decent breakfast.
We got settled in our room and set out for space cakes. Baba's
coffee shop set us up with chocolate and vanilla cakes, brownies
and shakes. Brett and Chris, both with 6 day beards, each had
a brownie and a shake and I tested the water with a chocolate
cake.
In anticipation of our impending stupification we headed back
to our room and vegged to Dutch MTV and another random chanel.
I don't know what kind of sick people would want to watch this
channel, but they must be out there. We named it VTV.
