Climbing the Matterhorn
[Driving] [2] up the picturesque valley to Zermatt was an awesome experience.
On both sides of the road extremely steep mountain. As you look
up you see houses built into, what looks like, the most unconvenient
places. There's obviously no road and unless you have a private
cable car system, funicular, or helicopter it looks as if you
hike it.
The town of Zermatt doesn't have enough physical space for all
the tourists and their cars. So you must park at the town before
Zermatt and take the train up.
We walked through the gift shop laden town and came to the base
of the cable lifts. Neither
Rob or I wanted to pay $24 do take the ride. So Rob talked me
into hiking it. It was a tough, steep hike. but completely worth
it. As we climbed higher we had great views of the whole valley.
[Looking
back at Zermatt] [glaciers] [2]
In my mind the Matterhorn was a place that I never thought about
because I assumed I'd
never visit it. So the realization of climbing to see it was a
bit unbelieveable. [The
Matterhorn] [Happy
Hikers] A
little beyond the cable lifts were great views of the [Matterhorn] .
We climbed to the top of the cable lifts in 3 hours and wanted
to continue as soon as we could see the peak better. But, with
less than an hour till dark, we had to turn around.
An hour later, back in Zermatt, we had a dinner at a Gästehaus.
Rob had a Wurst (sausage) with potatoes and I had a Gesundplate
('health plate') which was a kangaroo steak with a large salad.
I wish that I had snapped a shot of it, but I was way too hungry
to think of anything else but consumption.
